We will be reading books from the Jr. Classic Series. These books are fully illustrated and carefully adapted from the original versions. All books are written on a 3rd/4th grade reading level. Most Jr. High and High School Language Arts classes require these novels as part of their reading programs. Many students who have not been exposed to these books often find them difficult to read and understand. Hopefully, by exposing students to them now, they will acquire background knowledge and find it easier and enjoyable to read the full version. As we begin to "dig deeper" into the text, students will determine the theme of a story, describe in depth the characters, setting, and events drawing on specific details in the text.
To begin the year, everyone will read Carlo Collodi's, Pinocchio. Students will then be given a choice of titles to choose from depending upon the literature group they join. Students will decide how much they choose to read each night and all group members are expected to read the agreed upon selection and come prepared to participate in a discussion with their group the next day. Students not prepared must go to the library to catch up and will receive an incomplete for that day.
Titles include, but are not limited to:
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, L. Frank Balm
Treasure Island, Robert Louis Stevenson
Heidi, Johanna Spyri
Peter Pan, J.M. Barrie
